Google Core update

Google Implements Multiple Search Algorithm Updates, Validating Recent Rumors

As we mentioned in our newsletter on Tuesday morning, there has been significant speculation regarding a Google search ranking update over the weekend. Google has now somewhat confirmed the update, stating, “We did, actually several updates, just as we have several updates in any given week on a regular basis.”

Some have asked if there was an update to Google Search last week. Google responded, indicating that several updates had occurred, as is typical within any given week. In the thread, they also reminded users about when and why specific guidance is provided for particular updates.

The update itself drew much discussion, starting as early as November 7 and continuing through the weekend. Unlike core Search algorithm updates, this one was not pre-announced by Google. Those affected by the update reported being impacted by 30-50% either positively or negatively in terms of Google organic placement and traffic. Interestingly, tracking tools from companies like SEMRush, Mozcast, and RankRanger showed very little volatility, meaning they did not pick up on significant ranking changes in Google’s search results.

Google also provided more insights on these smaller, unannounced updates, stating that sometimes a particular update might be broadly noticeable. They share updates when there is actionable guidance for content owners. For example, when the Speed Update occurred, they provided months of advanced notice and advice.

Google reiterated that updates happen all the time in Google Search. If they don’t share details about them, it means there is no specific actionable guidance to follow other than to continue focusing on great content, as advised generally.

Regarding whether you can fix anything, Google mentioned that there’s often nothing to fix. However, they did share advice on what to work on if impacted by a core update. So, it might be helpful to read that advice, but keep in mind that no specific guidance was given for this particular update.

Why do we care? The noticeable changes in the search community and Google’s confirmation of several updates indicate that something noteworthy occurred in Google Search. Check your rankings and search traffic from Google. If you’ve seen an increase, that’s great. If you’ve seen a decline, consider reading the advice mentioned earlier to work on improving your website and content.
